One for One™

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” -Helen Keller

I am so pleased to have come across this today. I’m by no mean a fan of the way TOMS’ shoes look, but I love the cause. They now make glasses too! The program is called One for One™, and for every pair of glasses you buy, sight is given to someone in need. Visual are provided to the needy via glasses, sight-saving surgery or medical treatment. What an amazing idea! I’ve been wanting to buy a great pair of polarized sunglasses and instead of giving these multimillion dollar companies like Fendi, Coach, Tiffany, etc. my money, I think it’s a better idea to give someone sight. After all, I am an eye doctor or at least that’s the alleged rumor. Lol.

After working with Chicago public school system in a vision program through the Illinois Eye Institute, I saw that many children are in terrible need of not only a good education but good vision so that they can achieve that. Many kids are failing in schools across the country due to failure of parents/guardians to simply get them a pair of glasses. After working in low vision settings and with traumatic brain injury patients, I saw how much just the simple restoration of being able to read the newspaper or do a cross word puzzle meant the world to these patients. So if this is the case in the U.S., imagine how it is on a broad scale in other countries.

One thing about working in the optometry field is that I love to see the benefits of my work. Not many professions offer that. The look on someone’s face after they receive a new pair of glasses and can see for the first time is priceless. The sense of hope that’s given back to the elderly person who can now read the newspaper or Bible again, is heart warming. Things like that make me remember why I chose this profession and why I wouldn’t want to give that feeling up for anything in the world.

Kudos to TOMS for expanding their horizons by restoring vision one eye at a time. 🙂
